Ajax face AZ Alkmaar in the big Eredivisie match of the weekend and the Amsterdam side already look like favourites to win. Ajax ate into Eindhoven’s league lead last weekend with a 3-0 win over their rivals — and another victory on Sunday could see them right back in the game. Meanwhile, at the bottom, Sparta have been dragged back into the relegation scrap as their four-game unbeaten streak in the autumn dwindles in the memory. This weekend could prove crucial to both the top and bottom of the table. So, let’s check out the best Dutch football bets.
Bet on Ajax
Ajax are scoring for fun right now and on Sunday they travel to Alkmaar seeking to brush past another title rival. AZ have been in excellent form of late but on Tuesday their seven-game winning streak came to an end with a 1-1 draw at Zwolle. Now, Zwolle have proven a credible challenge to even the best sides in the Eredivisie this season and a draw is nothing to be sniffed at. But Ajax will have watched that game to work out AZ’s weaknesses. And it feels as though the momentum is swinging back to the Lancieri. It’s hard to explain just how big that 3-0 win over Eindhoven last weekend was. In midweek, Eindhoven drew 3-3 at Groningen. The league leaders are wobbling. With this in mind, it’s worth backing Ajax to narrowly win at AZ and maintain the pressure on Eindhoven. Ajax are unbeaten in their last four games with Alkmaar and are 5/4 to win on Sunday.
Bet on Eindhoven
So, has the last week been merely a wobble for Eindhoven, or is a more worrying trend developing? Eindhoven were stunned 3-0 by Ajax — a result that must have knocked the league leaders’ confidence. They then went to Groningen on Wednesday and drew 3-3 despite being 3-1 up after just 37 minutes. Groningen pummelled Eindhoven in the second half and deservedly got their reward. The away side’s inability to lock down the win surprised many Eredivisie betting tipsters. On Saturday Eindhoven face a Den Haag side that has won two on the bounce and who haven’t gone three successive victories since April 2017. Den Haag will likely be on the back foot but six goals in two games shows how clinical this side can be. Both teams to score is worth considering, with a draw at 7/1.
Other matches worth considering in the Eredivisie include Willem II v Zwolle and Sparta v Feyenoord.
Zwolle’s excellent season should not be sniffed at. They sit fourth in a Dutch division where the majority of other teams have bigger budgets. Their previous best finish was sixth back in 2014/15. Zwolle endured a miserable campaign last term and avoided relegation by just a point. But they have corrected their wrongs this term. Just two defeats all season — both to opposition above them in the league — has been the backbone of Zwolle’s campaign. They face a Willem II side on Saturday that is having a distinctly average campaign. Zwolle should win, and win comfortably, at 7/5.
Feyenoord, meanwhile, have strung together four games unbeaten (WWWD) as they start to get their momentum back. The defending champions are already out of the title race and European football has not helped their domestic cause. But a 2-1 win over Napoli last week was a huge boost to the Rotterdam side, even if they then drew with Heerenveen the following weekend. Goals have been a problem for Feyenoord and they come into the Rotterdam derby with Sparta knowing what happened last time. Back in May, when Feyenoord were one game from winning the title, Sparta beat their rivals 1-0. That won’t happen this time and Sparta v Feyenoord should go the way of the visitors at 2/5. But it will be a close game.
