World Cup football 2018

December 27, 2017

World Cup football returns in 2018 for the biggest sporting event on the planet! Russia is hosting the football for the first time in its history and the entire sporting globe will be watching the action. Expect thrills, drama and scintillating skills at the World Cup this year. And remember, you’ll be able to follow the whole thing live and in play right here with Unibet!

Can Russia win?

All eyes will be on this Russia side at the World Cup. The host nation has not won a World Cup since France did it in Paris in 1998. Russia are ranked as the lowest team of the 32 nations competing. They will have home advantage in every city they play in but must get past some amazing teams to even reach the final. France, Germany, Brazil and Spain all fancy their chances at this World Cup, which is being held in Europe for the first time since 2006.

Back goals, goals, goals at the World Cup

The World Cup in 2014 was a memorable one for so many reasons. One of which was the goals. There were some incredible goals scored in Brazil that summer and, crucially, plenty of them. 2014 witnessed 171 goals, at an average of 2.67 per game. That equalled the record set at France 98.

Temperatures in Russia and the summer climate in general means playing conditions should be perfect for fast-paced, attacking football. We can therefore expect plenty of to goals to fly in as the tournament progresses.

Betting on the World Cup

There are 64 games played at the World Cup, with 32 teams competing. Picking a winner from that lot is incredibly difficult and many football betting fans like to spread their bets across a number of matches throughout the tournament, while also backing an overall winner.

There are many ways to bet on the World Cup, including group stage overalls and special bets for each competing nation. Many experienced punters study each team individually before making bets on matches and tournament outcomes. It’s always good to know which teams are in form heading into a tournament, and which players are doing well for their club sides.

Some of the ways to bet on football include:

• Outright Betting – This involves choosing a team to win the tournament before the tournament starts. Unibet are offering great odds on outright betting, with Germany being the favourites to win

• Match Betting – This is the standard ‘1 X 2’ format of betting, where punters choose to pick an outcome of a game. France are the favourites of winning the first game of Euro Football 2016 against Romania.

• Live Betting – This involves betting in-play. Betting as the action unfolds gives players insightful information about the game which is then translated into more informed betting decisions.

• Other Markets – Each individual match has an extensive list of other betting options with great odds. Click on any match and you’ll have the option to bet on the number of goals, correct score, half time, handicap betting and match events to name a new.

Who will win?

Brazil and Germany are joint-favourites to win the World Cup before it starts. Germany won the tournament in Brazil four years ago but are not the dominating force they once were. Brazil, meanwhile, lost to the Germans in the infamous 7-1 semi-final defeat but their squad has since developed into a fearful attacking outfit.

France and Argentina are also likely to reach the latter stages of the tournament, even though the Argentines struggled to even qualify this year! Belgium are also in the running, while you cannot write off Portugal after their Euro Football 2016 victory.
