Graham Ruthven: Something for the Weekend

Graham Ruthven|17 March 2023

Player to score – Ivan Toney (Brentford v Leicester City)

Only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane have scored more goals in the Premier League this season than Ivan Toney with the 27-year-old called up to the England squad this week. Toney has scored six times in his last 10 appearances for Brentford and will fancy his chances of adding to his tally again this weekend.

Leicester have lost each of their last five matches in all competitions. What’s more, the Foxes haven’t kept a clean sheet in the Premier League since mid-November. Brendan Rodgers’ team have been vulnerable at the back for a number of months and Toney could do some serious damage to them

Under 1.5 total goals – Barcelona v Real Madrid

Barcelona enter Sunday’s Clasico as the runaway leaders at the top of La Liga with Xavi Hernandez’s team nine points clear of Real Madrid. Despite their strong recent form, Barca have struggled for firepower in the attacking third of late, winning their last four matches in all competitions by a scoreline of 1-0.

The Catalans have conceded just eight goals in 25 league fixtures this season and Real Madrid have scored just once in their last two games against their fiercest rivals. Barcelona have won nine of their last 10 matches and there have been under 2.5 total goals scored in nine of their last 11 games in La Liga.

Match to be a draw – Wolves v Leeds

Wolves have been inconsistent in their recent form with the Molineux outfit winning one, drawing one and losing three of their last five matches in the Premier League. Leeds, on the other hand, are without a win in their last three league fixtures, but come into this weekend’s game on the back of a 2-2 draw against Brighton.

Julen Lopetegui’s team have failed to score more than a single goal in any of their last five matches. Wolves have struggled for firepower throughout the season while Leeds have started to turn a corner since the appointment of Javi Gracia who has made the Elland Road outfit stronger at the back.

Both teams to score – Southampton v Tottenham

Southampton lost at home to Brentford midweek, but found the back of the net in four straight matches in front of their own supporters before that. There have been over 2.5 total goals in five of the Saints’ last six matches against Tottenham Hotspur in all competitions which bodes well for the neutral.

On top of this, both teams have scored in each of the last five meetings between Southampton and Spurs. Ruben Selles’ team are currently sitting bottom of the Premier League table, but Tottenham’s away record doesn’t make for good reason – they have lost each of their last four away games.

GRAHAM’S BET BUILDER

Chelsea look to have turned the corner under Graham Potter with the Blues winning each of their last three games. Despite this, Chelsea are still struggling to score goals in front of their own supporters – there hasn’t been a match involving Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with over 2.5 total goals since early November.

Everton have now gone 11 games without winning a match away from home. The Toffees found the back of the net twice against Nottingham Forest two weekends ago, but breaking through Chelsea who have kept back-to-back clean sheets at home will be a tougher task. What’s more, Everton have lost the second half in each of their last three away matches.
