Jamie Spencer: “Japan could offer a bit of value in the Eclipse at around 4-1”

SANDOWN

1.50pm Sandown: I like track form at Sandown and Lazuli certainly fits that bill after his impressive win here last time. He is nicely drawn in three and, lightly raced, he is clearly progressive and can come out best of the 3yos.

2.25pm Sandown: Everything is set up for Cross Counter to get back on the winning trail. He should get a good pace to aim at, despite the small field, and he can relax into a decent racing rhythm. He is well clear on the figures and the better ground will be in his favour, too. Spanish Mission obviously proved himself very smart last season and is a good prospect, but he could be a bit fresh here on his first start since February, and he does have his stamina to prove over 2m.

3.00pm Sandown: I am going to give Acquitted another chance after he ran no sort of race at Ascot. I do think stepping down from 1m2f to a mile will suit and, just 4lb higher than when previously chasing home Palace Pier at Newcastle, I am going with him to put that dismal last run behind him.

3.35pm Sandown:  This could be a very tactical race. Ghaiyyath obviously likes to go from the front but he will find dominating around Sandown far harder than he did at Newmarket, especially with Magic Wand in attendance, and I just think he is better off a longer break, too. Enable is six now so will she be fully tuned up here?, I reckon Japan could offer a bit of value at 4-1. He will need every yard of this 1m2f, but he was very good in the Juddmonte and I just think the race could set up nicely for him and he will surely come on a ton for his comeback run at Ascot.

HAYDOCK

2.05pm Haydock: A very competitive race but Jellystone is a progressive sort, and hopefully there is more to come from him. I know he is a Kodiac, which would suggest this 1m6f trip will not suit, but there is stamina on the dam side.

2.40pm Haydock: Ralph Beckett has three decent shots at this but Antonia De Vega could come out best of his. She made a winning return at Pontefract, and showed she handled soft ground well when winning at Newbury last season.

3.15pm Haydock: The ground could be an issue with Dal Horrisgle but he is by Nathaniel, whose progeny tend to handle cut well, and I just think he is a well handicapped horse. He had a nice pipe-opener over 1m2f at Newmarket last week, has won around here and I look back to his fifth in the Gordon Stakes and see a well-treated individual off 102. He was not beaten far and had a subsequent Group 1 winner behind in Technician. Sods law, he has been announced as a non-runner though so I will go with recent course winner Babbo's Boy.
