The Wine Tipster: “He will go well again on the Rowley Mile”

THE Al Sharab Lockinge Stakes Group 1 is the feature race of an excellent card at Newbury. Inspiral and Big Rock are joint favourities at Unibet 2/1, with my preference for Inspiral, who has a performed well on seasonal debut and is more ground versatile than her key rival Big Rock, who has won in more testing conditions. It is worth noting that favourites have won seven of the last ten runnings.

Earlier in the afternoon Desert Hero Unibet 11/8 is hard to oppose, having made great strides last season when winning at Ascot and Goodwood. He ran well too on seasonal debut at Sandown over an inadequate trip and will strike here.

2:25 Newbury – Highclere Castle Gin Carnarvon Stakes Listed (6f)

James’s Delight didn’t stay seven furlongs here when highly tried in the Greenham, but he soon got back to winning when a ready winner off top weight in a competitive handicap at Newmarket last time out. This is tougher again, but Thursday’s rain will have helped his cause (and is against a few of the others) and he just looks a very progressive three-year-old, so back him to take the step up in class in his stride over the trip where he has shown his best form.

3:00 Newbury – Trade Nation London Gold Cup Handicap (1m 2f)

Persica (nap) has to be in the mix for Unibet Ambassador Richard Hannon on the back of his 2½ length third to subsequent 2,000 Guineas winner Notable Speech at Kempton last time out.

Persica looks progressive and this step up in trip has to be a big plus given he is by New Bay, who won a Group 1 over this distance.

Unibet are paying an EXTRA PLACE in this race!

 

Individualism might have bumped into a very good one in the shape of Ice Max at Musselburgh last time and although beaten 5½ lengths, he himself was well clear of the rest. Fifth home Silent Move was a winner at Haydock next time to give the form a better look, and the handicapper has left Individualism alone, despite it being a good run on the figures. This step up to 1m 2f looks sure to suit on breeding, and he can reward each-way players.

 

4:45 Newbury –  OCS Handicap (1m)

Aalto heads to Newbury for the 4.45 Handicap, after initially being touted to return to the Rowley Mile in the highly competitive handicap.

Aalto was a winner over 1m 1f in France for his former yard, though he took his time acclimatising to his new surroundings when joining Ian Williams in the summer of last year, but he looked much improved when second at 40/1 to the well-treated Crack Shot at the Guineas meeting a fortnight ago, running on strongly up the hill to claim the runner-up spot. He’s been nudged up 2lb for that but that still leaves him 4lb below his original mark and with the prospect of a bit more to come now he should fare well, but faces stiff competition from favourite Godwinson and the punchy Sonny Liston!

Unibet are BOOSTING the price of the favourite in this race!

3.35 Newbury – Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes Group 1 (1m)

Hi Royal is worth an each way with three places being played at a big price with Inspiral my winning selection. Hi Royal made an encouraging seasonal debut when third in a Group 3 at Newmarket to Ottoman Fleet when finding the extra furlong on the Rowley Mile a shade too far.

If Hi Royal builds on that performance back over a mile he can gain a place here.
