The Wine Tipster: “Rathvinden in the Grand National is my bet of the day”

The Wine Tipster|6 April 2019

TODAY Tiger Roll winning back-to-back Grand Nationals is the Aintree story that we all want to see for horse racing as he would be the first horse to achieve this success since the great Red Rum.

This tremendous and admirable performer romped home at Cheltenham in the Cross Country and is well in the weights, yet his price of 4/1 is prohibitive for betting purposes.

My selections are below, although I would add in the spirit of this great race I have had an each way on A Toi Phil at 50/1.

Here is to a fantastic day!

2.25 – 2m4f Novice Hurdle

Very hard to knock the form of Brewinupastorm, good fourth in the Ballymore now looking all the better after Champ’s win yesterday, and ground has come right. Hard to beat.

Unibet win 3/1

3.00 – 2m Novices Chase

Us And Them can strike late off the likely helter-skelter pace, with Ornua, Clondaw Castle and Knocknanuss in the field. His Arkle second as good as any form here and is the one to beat.

Unibet win 100/30

3.40 – 3m Stayers Hurdle

Roksana even if she’d been second to Benie Des Dieux in the Mares, that would still have been a huge improvement and let’s not forget she kept Santini honest over 3m here last year. Looks a natural e/w alternative to Apple’s Jade, who is hard to fathom after her lacklustre Cheltenham effort.

Unibet each way 10/1

5.15 – Grand National 4m Chase

Rathvinden (nap) for the Willie Mullins team, who have had three winners this week, has been my Grand National selection since winning the Bobbyjo in such accomplished style in February when beating Alpha Des Obeaux.

This was a personal best and it is hard to knock his chances, given he’ll stay well, acts on soft ground, and still is only 4lb higher than when successful in the 4-miler at Cheltenham last year. No wonder Rathvinden is Ruby’s only ride of the day.

Unibet each way 7/1

Joe Farrell won the Scottish Grand National for Rebecca Curtis in 2018 beating Vintage Clouds and Ballyoptic two of his rivals today and it all looks like everything has gone to plan this season with an eye catching second at Newbury in February behind Chic Name when they were well clear of the rest.

Unibet each way 16/1

Ramses De Teillee is a progressive seven-year old who looks a good each way play as he has demonstrated this season he is true stayer, having finished second to Elegant Escape in the Welsh Grand National and then runner-up to Robinsfirth in the Grand National Trial at Haydock.

Whilst his age might be a concern, there is a recent trend to younger horses winning the Grand National with three eight-year-olds in the last five years.

Good each-way shout for the David Pipe yard who are on form.

Unibet each way 25/1

Walk In The Mill winner of the Becher Chase has been overlooked, having since had a couple of starts over hurdles in preparation for the Grand National. A good jumper, he has strong each way claims.

Unibet each way 28/1
