Matchday 1 was enough to remind everyone that the Premier League rarely sticks to the script. Hull City stunned Manchester United, Brentford thumped Tottenham, and Brighton ran riot at Aston Villa, leaving plenty of teams with something to prove before the second weekend even arrives.

Alexander Isak’s return to St James’ Park was another major talking point, with the former Newcastle striker facing a hostile reception on his first appearance at his old club since his £125m move to Liverpool. However, the forward couldn’t make the desired impact.

 

That sets up a fascinating football preview. Spurs need to prove they can react quickly, while Newcastle will want to turn an impressive opening performance into three points.

 

Arsenal Face a Very Different Test

Crystal Palace vs Manchester City is another fixture worth circling. City began the new campaign with a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth, but they needed a stoppage-time Josko Gvardiol winner after Marc Guéhi had cancelled out their opener. Rayan Cherki also made an impact from the bench, giving Enzo Maresca plenty to consider as his reign begins to take shape.

 

Palace, meanwhile, lost 2-0 at Everton. They will need a far more compact performance at Selhurst Park if they are to make life uncomfortable for a City side still finding its rhythm.

Key Players to Watch

Cole Palmer wasted little time reminding everyone what he can do. The Chelsea forward scored in the 3-2 win at Fulham and was involved in all three of his side’s goals, joining João Pedro and new signing Morgan Rogers as an attacking trio that immediately caught the eye. João Pedro made history by scoring after just 31 seconds, the fastest opening-day goal in Premier League history.

 

Chelsea now face Brighton, who were ruthless against Villa. That should provide a much better indication of how Alonso’s attacking ideas cope with a side capable of pressing and playing on the front foot.

 

Bukayo Saka arrives at Matchday 2 with his confidence boosted. His goal against Coventry was part of a comfortable Arsenal victory, but Villa should offer a much sterner examination. Saka’s ability to stretch the defence and create space around the box could be crucial if Arsenal are to break down a side determined to recover from a disastrous opening day.

 

Jack Clarke is another player worth watching. His 90th-minute winner gave Ipswich a dream return to the Premier League, and another strong performance against United would turn a promising opening weekend into a genuine talking point.

 

At Manchester City, Rayan Cherki changed the game after coming off the bench against Bournemouth, setting up both of City’s late goals in their 2-1 comeback win. His creativity could become increasingly important as Maresca works out his preferred attacking combinations.

 

What to Expect?

The second weekend should bring more clarity, although it is far too early to draw conclusions from one result.

 

Expect the teams who suffered heavy defeats to be cautious. Tottenham cannot afford to give Newcastle the same freedom Brentford enjoyed, while Villa must avoid another chaotic start against Arsenal.

 

The promoted clubs could also be worth watching closely. Hull have shown they are not simply here to make up the numbers, while Ipswich have three points in the bank and the confidence that comes with a late winner. Coventry, however, face a tricky trip to Hull after losing 3-0 to Arsenal.

 

Then there is Liverpool, who welcome Nottingham Forest to Anfield. The Reds were forced to settle for a draw at Newcastle, while Forest lost 1-0 at home to Leeds. Liverpool will want a cleaner performance, particularly in transition, after Newcastle exposed some of the defensive spaces they leave behind.

 

That could make for a lively afternoon on Merseyside.
