<< more Brazil 2016 info

Volleyball has been part of this international tournament ever since it was officially introduced in 1964. The men’s competition is dominated by the United States and Russia (former Soviet Union), who both have 3 gold medals and Brazil, the host of this year with 2 gold medals. The other four medals are spread out nicely among Japan, Poland, The Netherlands and Yugoslavia. Italy deserves mention as well, it is one of the few big countries in Volleyball that has won several medals (2 silver, 3 bronze), but never a gold medal.

The women’s competition seems to be equally dominated by a few countries. Again we find Russia/the Soviet Union (4 gold), Japan (2 gold) and Brazil (2 gold) in the top gold medal rankings, Cuba (3 gold) does well too and China managed to get one gold medal as well. The United States have less of a hold on women’s volleyball than they do on men’s volleyball although they did get silver in the past two events.

Tournament structure

The group stage has all teams play against the others in their pool once. Teams will be awarded three points for a 3-0 or 3-1 win, two points for a 3-2 win and one point for a 2-3 loss. The other results will give no points at all for the losing team. Four teams from each group will move on to the knock-out stage of the tournament.
