Dropped from the Squad – Players that will stay home this Euro Football 2016

It’s no easy task and managers make some tough decisions to downsize the squad to 23 players. It’s incredibly hard to make it into the squad with all the talent that’s out there, but some decisions are seen as highly controversial to an outsider. The following players have been omitted form their national side and we aim to discover why they have been overlooked.

Spain

Fernando Torres

The Euro 2012 top scorer was dropped by Vincent Del Bosque. Torres re-united with his old team Atletico Madrid and managed to find the net 11 times this season, but his performances didn’t convince the two time European Championship manager to include him in his plans this summer. Fernando Torres always managed to get on the scoresheet in previous European Championships. Could Del Bosque be making a mistake leaving El Niño out of the tournament?

Juan Mata

What a heartbreak! Juan Mata played the last six matches leading up to the squad announcement and failed to make the final squad! The 28 year old found the net 10 times and provided 8 assists this season. Unfortunately for Mata, Spain’s midfield is on fire, with the likes of Andres Iniesta, David Silva, Isco and Cesc Fabregas. Mata didn’t have a terrific season for Manchester United this season, which is probably the main reason for his omission foe the squad.

Diego Costa

Diego Costa was dropped from the Spanish squad due to his fitness levels, according to Del Bosque. "If Diego Costa was 100 per cent fit he would have been picked. The situation the other day was not so serious - and we are not here to punish."

England

Marc Albrighton

The 26 year old Premier League winner was not included in Hodgson’s plans for Euro 2016 despite having an excellent season at Leicester City.

Theo Walcott

Fans and the general football community always expected Theo Walcott to break out of his shell and reach his full potential in football. He didn’t have the best season at Arsenal match time was not in his favour, which are a few reasons for his omission from the squad.

Andy Carroll

Not a particularly impressive season by any means for Any Carroll. He found the net just 9 times this season and looked slow on the pitch at times. England are incredibly strong up front this time, and Carroll’s performances simply weren’t on par with the rest of the forward’s performances throughout the season.
