The Epsom Derby could have been known as the Epsom Banbury had a coin not landed the side it did, as great friends the 12th Earl of Lord Derby and Charles Banbury back in 1779 decided the name of the race on the toss of a coin and during the last 243 years some of the equine greats have won the Epsom Derby (and other races at the Epsom Derby Festival) cementing themselves into legendary status in the process.
The Epsom Derby 2023 is run over 1 mile 4 furlongs on the Epsom Downs and is the true test of a young racehorse, with its switchback racetrack and its relatively long distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs where inexperienced horses face a steep uphill climb followed by a demanding turning descent.
Billed as the ‘greatest show on turf’, The Derby is the race that every jockey, trainer, and owner wants to win. It has spawned many imitation Derby’s, but the Epsom Derby is the original and the best!
