The Commonwealth Cup is the third Group 1 sprint of the Royal Ascot week and the highlight of day four at the festival. With the quality field and a short six furlong distance expect a close and exciting finish.
Perfect Power stepped up in distance for a crack at the Guineas but after travelling strongly for much of way, he tailed off in the later stages. He will now take the step back to six furlongs and aim for the Commonwealth Cup. The Richard Fahey charge was a dual Group One winner over six furlongs last season, including victory in the Norfolk Stakes at the Royal meeting.
The speedy Go Bears Go could be a leading contender, judging by his performance in winning the Group 3 Pavilion Stakes which acts as a Commonwealth Cup trial. The three-year-old provided Dave Loughnane with his biggest winner to date last season in the Railway Stakes at the Curragh but a victory at Royal Ascot would launch the small stable into the spotlight.
One outsider who might have a live chance at long odds is El Caballo. He arrives to Ascot unbeaten in his four all-weather races and has won five of his six career starts. Trainer Karl Burke has enjoyed an excellent start to the 2022 campaign and he will hope heâs good enough for the Commonwealth Cup level.
