Game Tips for the Summer Olympics
So, what should you consider before you start Olympic betting? Well, the first thing to remember is not to go wild. There are so many Olympics sports and individual events that it’s easy to get lost in it all and bet on sports you know nothing about.
Pick a sport you have some knowledge in. Popular events include football, tennis, athletics, and equestrian. Then, do your research into the athletes. Check their form, past history of results, recent injuries, and other factors that might influence their performance.
Remember: don’t just bet on someone because you WANT them to win. And also don’t go betting on people just because you like or dislike the sound of their name. Jelani Walker might sound slow, but he’s actually one fast guy in the Jamaican relay team.
Which Sports are in the 2024 Olympics?
This comprehensive list of sports has all the info and betting tips you need for this Olympics.
Athletics
Athletics are hugely popular. You can see top athletes in their prime in track and field events. Bet on famous names like Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in the 100m and Josh Kerr and Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the 1500m, or place your wagers on the underdogs. Track and field event include:
- 100m
- 200m
- 4x100m Relay
- 110m Hurdles
- 1500m
- Discus
- Shotput
- Hammer Throw
- Pole Vault
- Long Jump
- High Jump
Are you a fan of accumulator betting? Athletics is great for this! Add multiple bets on different athletes to win their events into one big bet for the best odds!
Swimming
Olympic swimming is always an entertaining watch. Team USA are well-represented here, and Paris 2024 is no exception (take Katie Ledecky and teen sensation Summer McIntosh, for example). Plus, look out for Adam Peaty for Team GB! You can bet on the backstroke, freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, and individual medley across different distances.
Wrestling
Who doesn’t love a good record breaker? Cuban Greco-Roman wrestler Mijaín López is aiming to do something unprecedented. He could – in Paris 2024 – become the first athlete ever to win gold in the same event in five consecutive Olympics. Crazy, right? Although he’s 41 years young, never rule him out when betting. Bet on both men’s and women’s freestyle or Greco-Roman wrestling.
Rowing
Tom George and Ollie Wynne-Griffith are a pair of class rowers. They’re undefeated this season and are favourites to win gold. Plus, they’re part of Team GB! There are plenty of rowing events you can get on your bet slip. Place your wagers on men’s and women’s pair races, single sculls, double sculls, quadruple sculls, and races involving teams of four and eight rowers.
Badminton
The Asian continent dominates badminton. Asian athletes have won 106 out of all 121 possible medals in Olympic badminton. China and Chinese Taipei are the nations to look out for after their stellar performances at Tokyo 2020. Spread your bets over the men’s and women’s singles and doubles to maximise your winnings.
Basketball
Will Team USA crush the competition? Or will emerging European powerhouses have something to say? The US men’s team has Lebron James and Steph Curry… need we say more? Naturally, Team USA are favourites for the men’s gold, but then you have countries like Serbia, Greece, Germany, and Italy, all of whom will be looking to claim bragging rights. Basketball betting is great for in-play and prop bets. For example, you can bet on player points totals and player fouls.
Canoe
Canoe and kayak events are great fun to watch. Athletes weave through gates with grace and ease. Look out for Kimberley Woods as Team GB’s representative in the women’s canoe slalom. Other events include the kayak cross and canoe sprint over varying distances.
Cycling
Fans of cycling are blessed with so many events at the Paris 2024 Olympics. You’ve got the indoor velodrome track events and the outdoor road races. Then there’s mountain biking, a relatively new addition to the Olympics. Catch Tom Pidcock and Katie Archibald for Team GB in their respective events.
Equestrian Sports
It’s medal time for Team GB! We’ve historically been very successful in equestrian sports, from dressage to showjumping to eventing. Our team of athletes includes current world champion Lottie Fry, plus the aptly named Ros Canter. Research both the riders and their horses if you want to place successful bets on equestrian sports at the Olympics.
Fencing
Can you believe fencing has been at the Olympics since day one? Fencing events are separated into categories based on the types of sword being used. There are both men’s and women’s events for the épée, foil, and sabre. Plus, there are men’s and women’s team events.
Football
Team GB aren’t in the football this Olympics (much to our sadness). Still, there are some of the sport’s best athletes on show. This is particularly true for the women’s tournament, as there are no age restrictions for players.
This means you can watch Brazilian legend Marta show off her quick feet, as well as Argentina and Man City’s Julian Alvarez and Spain and Barcelona’s star Aitana Bonmatí. Olympic football betting is great as there are so many markets. Bet on player shots, cards, goals, assists, scores, and outright winners.
Golf
Fancy some golf betting on the Olympics? At Unibet, you can do just that! Move over Ryder Cup and Masters, Olympic golf is here! Watch the best golfers like Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Tommy Fleetwood, and Jon Rahm tee off at Le Golf National just outside Paris.
Gymnastics
Simone Biles is back for more! Artistic gymnastics has 14 events that include the pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, singles, and team events – all for your entertainment (and the athletes’ pride, of course). Meanwhile, rhythmic gymnastics and trampolining have two events each (men’s and women’s).
Handball
Alternative team sports are the best, aren’t they? Olympic handball tournaments always throw up some great matchups! And handball betting is so easy to get into if you’re new to the sport. Looking for betting tips on which teams to bet on at Paris 2024? Well, Germany, Denmark, Hungary, Sweden, and hosts France are the ones to watch this year.
Field Hockey
Looking for an underrated sport to watch? Hockey has been at the Olympic Games for a while now and it always throws up some cracking matches. Team GB are at the top of their game going into the tournament, but Netherlands and Australia are right up there with them. Who knows what surprises and shocks Olympic hockey will bring this year?
Judo
Judo is split into different events based on weight and gender – just as you’d expect from a martial art. Japan – the birthplace of Judo – is the favourite, but some unexpected nations may also get the golds. Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are great at judo. Basically, we’re saying don’t discount any nation when it comes to betting on judo.
Rugby
Can you believe that between 1924 and 2016 there was no rugby in the Olympics? That’s almost an entire century without one of the world’s most popular sports! Thankfully, we now have rugby sevens (a form of rugby union) in the Olympics. Hosts France are looking very strong contenders for the gold. But don’t discount Great Britain, New Zealand, Argentina, Australia, and Fiji either.
Taekwondo
Taekwondo covers the <58kg, <68kg, <80kg, and 80kg+ events for men and <49kg, <57kg, <67kg, and 67kg+ for women. Jade Jones is back after her shock first-round exit in Toko 2020, and she’ll be going for her third gold medal for Team GB.
Tennis
Let us reel off some names for you: Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Rafael Nadal, Cameron Norrie, Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Carlos Alcaraz. All of these big names will be starring at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Plus, it’ll be Andy Murray’s last hurrah before he retires! He’ll partner with Dan Evans in the men’s doubles event.
Table Tennis
Table tennis has five medal events split over men’s and women’s singles and doubles and one mixed doubles event. China has dominated Olympic table tennis for years, and athletes Wang Chuqin and Fan Zhendong are the favourites. Felix Lebrun is the best-ranked European player and will be going for gold for Team GB.
Shooting
Shooting has been around since the very first modern Olympics in 1896. There are 15 shooting gold medals up for grabs split between gender and team events. You can bet on all the events from rifle, pistol, trap, skeet, and rapid fire pistol. Do you research before betting on athletes, but China and the USA are always solid contenders.
Archery
Archery is divided into singles and teams events for men and women (plus a mixed team event). South Korea has traditionally dominated archery, so these athletes are always favourites among bettors.
Triathlon
This sport is the combination of three other sports: running, swimming, and cycling (hence the name, triathlon). Only introduced in 2000, Team GB is the most successful when it comes to the triathlon. Historically, the Brownlee brothers have starred, but this year we won’t see any of them. In their place for Team GB, we’ll have Alex Yee, Georgia Taylor-Brown, Beth Potter, Kate Waugh, and Sam Dickinson.
Sailing
Sailing will not actually be held in Paris, but in Marseille in the south of France. There are 10 medals up for grabs split between 5 events: skiff, dinghy, kite, windsurfing, and multihull. Team GB and the USA are the best in the world right now, but keep an eye out for France and Germany too.
Volleyball
Another exciting sport, volleyball is now an Olympic Games staple. France and the USA are the current defenders of the gold medals in the men’s and women’s events. Other titans of the sport include Italy and Brazil.
New Sports in the 2024 Olympics
Breaking, surfing, skateboarding, and sport climbing are all new sports that feature in Paris 2024. Breaking, or breakdancing, will feature for the very first time, while others return after debuting at Tokyo 2020.
Surfing will be the only one not held in France itself. Instead, it will be held in Tahiti in French Polynesia. Skateboarding returns as the Japanese look to reassert their dominance in the sport with athletes like Yuto Horigome and Sora Shirai. Betting on new sports is incredibly fun because they’re just so damn entertaining to watch!
