With the European Championships 2021 on the horizon, it is always exciting to speculate who may be crowned champions. However, another outright market that may tickle your fancy is the Euro top goalscorer.
France’s Antoine Griezmann may have scooped the Golden Boot at the European Championships 2016, but he suffered disappointment as his side lost in the final to Portugal. While team trophies carry the most weight, individual accolades matter to some players.
But who will be crowned the Euro best goalscorer this summer?
Naturally, Harry Kane is an obvious place to start. Kane, at the time of writing, is the clear favourite at 7/1, and the Tottenham striker has enjoyed another fabulous campaign. He was already a lethal forward, but he has been more productive on the assists front too.
While he finished another campaign trophyless with his club, he netted 20+ goals again last term, and at the 2018 World Cup, Kane shone as he plundered six goals.
Under Gareth Southgate, Kane has flourished on the international scene, and he is bearing down on Wayne Rooney’s all-time record for England of 53 goals. It would therefore be unsurprising if Kane finished top of the pile in the goalscoring stakes.
There are plenty of creditable contenders, but Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe could well threaten the Euro top goalscorer market. Both Ronaldo and Mbappe have been models of consistency, and they have both thrived in their respective domestic leagues as well as the Champions League.
Currently, there is nothing separating the duo in terms of the Euro top goalscorer odds, as they are valued at 9/1. If both are firing on all cylinders, they could overhaul Kane.
While he is ranked slightly lower than his rival in the goalscorer market, a special mention needs to be reserved for Griezmann. After topping the goalscorer charts at the European Championships 2016, the Barcelona forward may have struggled to make an impression in La Liga, but he thrives on the international stage.
However, Griezmann should never be discounted. While he is trading at 19/1, and appears to be an outsider in the Euro top goalscorer markets, this appears to be a rather tempting price.
